BAHS meets monthly from September to April for a talk on a fascinating range of Norfolk-related topics by expert speakers. Do join our friendly group!
Speaking at our April meeting, archaeologist Dr An Speaking at our April meeting, archaeologist Dr Andy Hutcheson @sisjac_uea describes the location of Warham Camp where he is the project lead. A large audience was treated to insights into hill forts around the UK. Dr Hutcheson said Warham shares an important structural feature with other hill forts - the four post structure. He theorised this was built as a grain store but later used as a human burial site. Some Iron Age pieces of pottery have been found at Warham.

Black Shuck, a ghostly dog with red eyes, is the stuff folklore but who doesn’t love a ghost story! A white-crowned sparrow has been immortalised in t A white-crowned sparrow has been immortalised in the great west window of Cley church. It caused a sensation when spotted in Cley in 2008 - a first ever sighting in Norfolk. Bird-watchers poured in and a voluntary collection raised £6000 used to repair the window. Richard spoke movingly about a Cley man who died during WW2 when the Lancaster Bomber he was in crash landed in the UK after a night time raid over Germany while Caroline spoke about the Hotblacks of Norwich. The cheeky face behind the happy couple belongs to The cheeky face behind the happy couple belongs to Cley man William Voellner, the topic of Richard Jefferson’s talk tomorrow afternoon (January 27) at 2.30. Richard has worked hard to make sure that Cley men who (spoiler alert) who died in WW1 and WW2 are remembered. Do come and hear more about the circumstances of Voellner’s death. Blakeney played a critical role in the evolution o Blakeney played a critical role in the evolution of Margaret Atwood’s most successful novel, the dystopian The Handmaid’s Tale in the early 1980s. A Lancaster Bomber was the plane in which William A Lancaster Bomber was the plane in which William Voellner went on a mission during WW2. At our next meeting, local historian Richard Jefferson will share new information about William whose name, along with many other local men, is on the Cley war memorial. Join us on January 27 at 2.30 in CLEY Village Hall in return for small entry fee which includes tea and biscuits. 🙏
